Fire Arts and Safety Class and Weekly Classes

On Sunday, April 22nd, I am teaching a Fire Arts and Safety class that will qualify participants for their License to Burn. This three-hour class begins at 6:00 pm. Each student will get a fire safety manual, and have the opportunity to safety, extinguish fire, and use a variety of fire tools under the guidance of a trained instructor. Cost is $50. Location: 609 Sardis Drive, Raleigh, NC 27603 (weather permitting). Preregistration required. (Please wear form fitting, natural fiber clothing, without tears, and good shoes.) Feel free to bring a snack and the beverage of your choice. We will hang out and fire spin and jam after class.

Intro to Hooping – This is a one-time class at King’s Barcade in downtown Raleigh this Sunday. Space is very Limited! For more info and to register, go here: https://www.facebook.com/events/394209590602870/

Hoop Series in the Backyard!

– I had hoped to be in the beautiful new circus school, Cirque du Vol, by this time this year but renovations are running behind so I am going to teach another series here in my back yard. Bring sunscreen, bug spray and good shoes.

This eight-week series begins on Thursday, April 28th.

Building You Foundation – This is my Introduction to Hoopdance course and I recommend everyone take it, even if you are already a hooper. In this series we will create the building blocks that let you progress quickly, systematically, and without injury while also integrating dance concepts that we will explore in much more depth in future series. We will develop good posture and breathing habits that give us energy and control, we develop good mental habits that will help us coach ourselves and others, we will develop our understanding of the physics of hooping on the core body: lower core — waist, hips, thighs ; upper core — chest, shoulders, neck, and also hoop off-body on the hands and arms, exploring both speeds and range of motion. and finally we will introduce dance concepts for using the arms, hands and fingers, the feet, traveling steps, turns and spins, and lots more! I recommend you buy and bring to class each week a notebook to use for your training notebook (something with out spirals, cuz those catch on things. Flat back is more portable) and a pen. These are good for recording our exercises, teachings and epiphanies. They also make a cool journal of your hoop experience over time.

Time: 6:00 – 7:30 pm: Cost: $120

Taking It To The Next Level – This course will be an exploration of all the concepts and exercises mentioned in Building Your Foundation. (Bring your notebooks!) We will explore planes, transitions, directions, skill-building on the core and off-body, concepts such as “contact versus tosses”, “repetitions” and “alternation”, concepts about dance, and most importantly, improvisation! At the end of the day, that’s what we want. To improvise to music. We’re going to study doing that consciously, courageously, and creatively.

Time: 7:30 – 9:00 pm; Cost: $120

Poi Series: I am thinking of offering another poi series, one where we explore dance concepts, range of motion, and all the same ideas from the hoopdance series, only with poi. If this is something you’re interested in, let me know. It would be a Monday night series or perhaps a single Sat or Sun in May. It’s a busy month but I’d like to do it while it’s so nice out.
